At a Sprynge Wel
An evening of poetry, song & music:
# Eight new settings of Middle English poetry, and four musical interludes, composed by Julian Masters, performed by Jo de Waal, Giles Lewin and Julian Masters
# Bernard de Ventadorn and Peire d’Alvernhe, our 12th Century hosts for this half of the performance, manifest two distinct strands in the poetry and music of their time and place. Peire is acerbic, witty, self conscious, awkward and virtuosic at once in his verse and his sinuous melodies, while Bernard is supremely gifted and elegant, giving out a cultivated simplicity.
To end, we venture out into a meeting of poets at Puivert in the late 1100’s, where assembled Troubadours are being subjected to a storm of playful invective by their friend / foe Peire d’Alvernhe; here in a vivid brand new translation by the poet Joseph Butler.
